RAV MATHARU
FOUNDER, CLOTHSURGEON
Rav is the face behind classic-contemporary menswear brand clothsurgeon. Named after his quirk of cutting patterns with a scalpel, clothsurgeon has been described as ‘the Savile Row of streetwear’: existing in the sweet spot between high-end tailoring and slick street style.
Before setting his sights on fashion, Rav’s first love was football. He played pro for Leeds United until he was 21, as one of only a few British Asians in the game – but eventually quit as a result of short-term contracts. He later retrained at Leeds College of Art and Design, then spent a few years with bespoke tailoring brand House of Billiam before striking out on his own. Rav has now come full circle, collaborating with Sports Direct on a capsule collection made from upcycled sports kits. A$AP Rocky, Kendrick Lamar and Lewis Hamilton are also among his notable clientele.
clothsurgeon has since opened a flagship store in Savile Row – and is the first bespoke streetwear brand and British South Asian designer to do so.
