ASAVARI KUMAR
VISUAL ARTIST, DIRECTOR
Asavari is using animation to transcend geographical boundaries and cultural limitations. She runs Supernova Design with her sister and fellow creative Shivalini. They work with commercial clients like YouTube, Slack, Disney and Headspace, while also creating their own projects to share with the creative community in Los Angeles.
One of Asavari’s notable credits has been on the feature film He Named Me Malala, for which she used Malala Yousafzai’s childhood memories to recreate spaces and environments in the Swat Valley, Pakistan. She has also designed graphic artwork used to create landscapes for the Lego Movie 2. Asavari also self-directed the short film Passage, which follows the journey of an Indian woman moving to, and living in the United States. Working with several other women and POC artists to bring it to life, Asaveri says her aim was to reflect her own experiences while also making a wider point about lack of diverse female representation in her industry.
Asavari’s work has been variously shown at places like the Los Angeles Zine Fest, Ottawa International Animation Festival, and the American Documentary and Animation Festival. She has also been featured in Cartoon Brew, Adobe Create Magazine and Animation Reporter Magazine, among others. She is now dipping her toe into Augmented Reality, to explore how it can be used as a medium for intimate storytelling.
